PLog
Q: Does PLog run on any device besides a PDA with a Palm operating system?
A: Yes. We have recently developed a version of PLog for the tablet/laptop work environment. The PLog Tablet/Laptop edition will run on computers with Windows 2000, Windows XP or Windows Vista office editions.
Q: We are looking at this for an environmental (contaminated site application) for soils and for groundwater (including monitoring well installation).
A: You can customize PLog to record the type of environmental measurements you need. PLog version 5 comes with PID and FID, GRO, DRO, TPH, and SOV measurements. You may add or remove environmental measurements you perform in the field from this list to record in PLog on your PDA.
Q: My company has several reports it sends to different clients and agencies. Do I need a correspondence file for each report?
A: Not likely. The correspondence file allows you to transfer your data to your structure defined by the gINT data template – the excel-like tables in gINT that do not have formatting in them. You need a correspondence file for each data template. Reports in gINT use the data from your gINT library to display the data as you want or need. You can have several reports using only one data template. If you have more than one data template you need more than one correspondence file.
Q: Can I log sample lengths in feet?
A: Yes. You decide whether you collect sample lengths in inches or feet.
Q: I want to log samples in inches, but my logs are in feet. Is this a problem?
A: No, regardless of the units you log your samples in, your output will always be in your standard reporting units.
Q: Can I generate a boring log in the field?
A: No. PLog is currently a field data collection device, and independent of any log reporting software. You must HotSync your PDA to a PC and import the data into gINT or other boring log reporting software to produce a log.
Q: Can I view a complete log in the field on the PDA?
A: No, you can not view a complete log in the field on a PDA because of limited screen size. Try scaling down an 8.5” x 11” piece of paper to 2.5” x 2.5”. You can’t see much. You can review individual descriptions and copy descriptions between boreholes so having the need to refer back for a specific description is decreased.
Q: PLog is nice, but we have field tests that are unique to my state. Can these tests be added?
A: Yes. We will customize any of our software to include your tests for a reasonable fee.
Q: We have several departments in my company with different data they collect in the field. Is it possible to customize PLog for each department?
A: You can develop several libraries for PLog - one for each department. Before starting a job you simply HotSync you PDA to the desired department library.
Q: I logged some description items in PLog and they are not present in my gINT log. Where are those items?
A: We developed your correspondence file based on your company standard descriptions. If the description item you logged on PLog is not a part of your standard description, chances are we did not include it in the correspondence file. For example, if your company never describes soil odor we did not map soil odor in PLog to your gINT files. Soil odor did not make it to your final description based on your company standards.
Q: Does PLog support other soil classifications besides USCS?
A: PLog can be configured to collect data using AASHTO, Modified Burmister, BSI as well as USCS.
Q: What version of gINT do I need to work with PLog, PWell or PDensity?
A: Version 6 or higher.
Q: Will PLog work with gINT Logs?
A: Yes. PLog will work with any gINT software version 6 or higher.
Q: When I try to send my data from PLog to gINT, it is not going in to gINT. Who do I call for help – Dataforensics or gINT?
A: First, go to where you are storing your PLog files (typically c:program files\PLog). Open the gINTPLog.pld with Microsoft Access. Go to the project table and double click it. If the project data in question is in the gINTPLog.pld file, but not getting to gINT, it is a gINT problem. Please contact gINT Software. If your project data is not in the gINTPLog.pld file, please call us.
Q: Do I need to hire you to update the correspondence file every time I change my gINT data template or want to add a description item to my soil or rock descriptions?
A: You do not need to hire us every time you want to make a change to your data template to update your data template. When you need to hire us depends on your gINT skills. If you are comfortable working on correspondence files in gINT, you can make necessary changes on your own. If you are not familiar with working on correspondence files in gINT, but the change is relatively straightforward (such as adding a column to a table or adding a description item to you soil or rock description) you can call us and we can walk you through the process. If the changes are more complex, you will likely need to hire us to perform the changes for you.
